Endoscopy & Colonscopy

Colonoscopies and Endoscopies are some of the most common procedures performed at the Longmont Surgery Center. Here we have provided you with general information on these procedures so that you may know what to expect.

Colonscopy
A colonscopy is a procedure for viewing the interior lining of the large intestine (colon) using a small camera called a colonoscope. This procedure is performed while you lie on your left side with your knees down up toward the abdomen. After the administration of an intravenous sedative and analgesic, the instrument is inserted through the anus and gently advanced under direct vision to the terminal small bowel.

Gastroscopy
A gastroscopy examination is a procedure in which an endoscope is inserted through the mouth, the lining of the esophagus, stomach, and upper duodenum so the proper areas can be visually examined for any abnormalities or growths. The endoscope is a flexible fiberoptic scope with a light that helps a physician see inside certain internal organs. A biopsy can be taken through an endoscope if there are any areas that look suspicious.

What Can You Expect:

  • Patients should prepare for these examinations by following your doctor’s preparation schedule
  • Arrive at the Surgery Center and check-in 30 minutes prior to your exam time
  • You will be asked to change into a gown and the nurse will then start an IV and make any other final preparations prior to your exam
  • Procedure times are scheduled, however, short delays may sometimes occur. A delay
of more than one hour is extremely rare
  • During the procedure you will be given a sedative so that you will experience
minimal discomfort during the procedure. The exam itself will take 15 – 30
minutes. You can expect that your recovery time will be between 30
    minutes and an hour.
  • Your doctor will be available to speak with you and your family before
    and after the exam
  • Please remember that you will not be allowed to operate a motor vehicle
for the rest of the day.
