A
Gastroscopy Examination (EGD)
is a procedure whereby an endoscope is inserted through the mouth, the
lining of the esophagus, stomach, and upper duodenum so the proper areas
can be visually examined for any abnormalities or growths. A biopsy can be
taken through the endoscope of any suspicous areas that are seen. (An
endoscope is a flexible fiberoptic scope with a light that helps a
physician see inside certain internal organs.)
1.
Prepare prior to the day of the examination as detailed on the preparation
schedule below.
2. Go to the Longmont Surgery Center, located on the first
floor of the United Medical Building which is attached to the far west end of
the hospital. Check in at the reception desk thirty minutes prior to your
scheduled exam time.
3. You will read and sign a consent form and change into a
gown. A nurse will then start an IV and do any other final preparations before
your exam.
4. Your doctor will be available to speak with you and your
family before and after your exam.
5. Procedure times are scheduled; however, circumstantial
delays, usually not exceeding one hour, can occur.
6. You will be given a sedative to help you tolerate the
procedure with minimal discomfort. Examination times vary between fifteen and
thirty minutes. Recovery time before you are released to go home varies between
thirty minutes to one hour. You will not be allowed to drive a motor vehicle
for the rest of the day, so arrange for a friend or family member to drive you
home. Taxi rides are not acceptable.
